Our symbol is inspired by an enduring and perpetual Aotearoa New Zealand icon, the koru.
The unfurling fern frond is representative of peace, tranquillity, growth, positive change and awakening. This dimension of peace is also inherent in the meaning of the living faith of Islam.
We draw parallels between this taonga and the journey that New Zealanders have ahead of them to become a safer and more inclusive society.
The koru design with seven groups of seven unfurling fronds also acknowledges that 15 March 2019 was, according to the Islamic lunar calendar, 7 Rajab 1440, that is, the 7th day of the 7th Islamic month.
